This remote farm was in need of a boiler upgrade due to the age of the oil boiler. He decided to turn to renewables as he had a large store of wood that could be used instead of running the oil system.
The boiler was to be put in a barn next to the property and underground pipes run through to the existing heating system.
The pictures below show the barn prior to the installation
The sepcification for the system was as follows:
Supply and fit HDG Euro 50kw wood boiler complete with Lambda controller
3000litre accumulator (or 2 x 1500L dependant on room height) thermal heat dump, pressure gauge, pressure release valve
2 x 3 way mixing valves primary pump and thermometers
low loss mixing header for oil boiler (fitted in house) oil boiler primary and system pumps.
400-litre expansion vessel fitted in barn.
Convert system to fully pumped unvented with independent thermostatic control of central heating and hot water circuits.
Twin skin stainless steel chimney system for wood boiler.
Insulated twin pipe and control wire in trench provided. Trench should ideally be at least 750mm deep as the deeper the pipe the less heat loss
A section was set out ready for a concrete base to be poured to site the boiler and accumulators
The installation was comissioned and has been running for over a year. It has saved approximately £4,000 in oil costs. With the RHI coming into effect late 2012, he can also expect to earn approx £3,500 per year through the RHI grant.
With his wood fuel coming from his own site, savings will be up to £8,000 per year compared to his old system.
